As you read these words, the Dolores River flows through the rugged desert expanse of Western Colorado, weaving life into the Dolores River Canyon Country and beyond. The meandering river and adjacent sandstone canyons and Ponderosa pine forests represent one of the most biodiverse regions in Colorado. A rich ecosystem of plants and wildlife relies on the Dolores River – including native fish, river otters, beavers, black bears, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and songbirds. It is also a lifeline for the Southwestern United States, connecting to the Colorado River system and sustaining the lives of 40 million people.Today, drought and overuse pose an existential threat to the Dolores River. Once a mighty river that regularly flooded its banks, now you can walk along exposed rocks that once lay beneath its flow. This transformation paints a vivid picture of the impacts of climate change—a change that compels us to protect this natural wonder. For over a decade, community leaders, conser...

After recalls and infections, experts say safer eyedrops will require new FDA powers

By MATTHEW PERRONE (AP Health Writer)WASHINGTON (AP) — When you buy eyedrops at a U.S. store, you might assume you’re getting a product made in a clean, well-maintained factory that’s passed muster with health regulators. But repeated recalls involving over-the-counter drops are drawing new attention to just how little U.S. officials know about the conditions at some manufacturing plants on the other side of the world — and the limited tools they have to intervene when there’s a problem. The Food and Drug Administration is asking Congress for new powers, including the ability to mandate drug recalls and require eyedrop makers to undergo inspections before shipping products to the U.S. But experts say those capabilities will do little without more staff and resources for foreign inspections, which were a challenge even before the COVID-19 pandemic forced regulators to skip thousands of visits.“The FDA is not getting its job done in terms of drug qual...

Want to visit Yosemite this summer? You’ll need a reservation

Does the wilderness feel less wild when it must be scheduled?Summer visitors driving to Yosemite National Park will soon find out, when the park moves to a reservation-only entry system, like movie theaters and theme parks.Overwhelmed by last year’s crush of visitors, the popular park will also require advance booking of vehicles on spring and autumn weekends, according to a plan announced by the Park on Wednesday. Reservations will open at 8 a.m. on Jan. 5.The plan is based on the past four years of experience, as well as public feedback and lessons learned from other national parks, said Superintendent Cicely Muldoon.Reservations were required during the COVID pandemic, then again due to many construction projects that restricted access to certain areas of the park this year.It enhanced the wilderness experience, rather than detracting from it, she said.“The people who were able to get reservations absolutely loved it,” experiencing giant sequoia groves, wilderness and waterfalls ...
