MLB rule changes: shortened pitch clock, widened runner's lane

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:39:19 GMT

Major League Baseball's 11-man competition committee adopted a number of rule changes Thursday, which included widening the runner's lane going to first base, while also shortening the pitch clock in different situations. When it comes to the new pitch clock rule, the time limit for pitchers to deliver a pitch while runners are on base will be shortened from 20 seconds down to 18, in an effort to continue to speed up games, as evidenced by the implementation of the pitch clock last season.According to MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, the strategy behind shortening the pitch clock even more from last season was backed by the idea to get the seven-ish minutes back that accumulated at the end of games from April to September.Average game length by month in 2023:April — 2:37May — 2:38June — 2:39July — 2:41August — 2:41September — 2:44The new runner’s lane overrides a rule that has existed since the National League mandated in 1882 that runners must be within the 3-foot box on the foul side...

‘The Color Purple’ review: An exhilarating, larger-than-life journey

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:39:19 GMT

Like its central character, Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Color Purple” has had a long journey. Published in 1982, this lyrical story of a poor Black woman’s eventual triumph over an abusive husband and a seemingly uncaring world became a movie directed by Steven Spielberg in 1985, and then a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical in 2005. And here it is, transformed again: a new movie, based on the stage musical but featuring some new songs, directed by filmmaker/musician Blitz Bazawule.Let me just repeat a key word in that previous sentence: This is a capital-M Musical, complete with big songs and enormous dance numbers and larger-than-life emotions — and it’s often irresistibly exhilarating, as the best musicals can be. I haven’t seen the stage version of “The Color Purple,” but I can absolutely imagine what an impact it would have on an audience, how Miss Celie’s journey would sweep you up and carry you to a higher, more joyful place. That’s basically what happen...

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court reversed the conviction of Aaron Munise, 37, of Johnstown. He was convicted of criminally negligent homicide for fatally rear-ending off-duty State Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand in November 2018. Get the latest news, weather, sports and more delivered right to your inbox! The court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove that 37-year-old Aaron Munise had committed criminally negligent homicide. Prosecution and defense agreed that the crash was VanNostrand's fault--although he hit the brakes and slowed from 60 to 45 miles per hour, he couldn't prevent the crash. The decision hinged on the severity of the crime."A failure to brake, without more, does not constitute criminal negligence," the decision reads. "Defendant's unexplained failure to perceive the victim's vehicle, careless as it may have been and tragic as its results were, is insufficient to establish the necessary blameworthy conduct for defend...

The stakes are high for the Broncos in their matchup against the New England Patriots on Sunday, but head coach Sean Payton enjoys it. In fact, he craves these pressured situations.“It’s addictive,” he said. “As great as it feels when you win and all the things that go into it, it’s like the opposite when you don’t. It’s like misery — you can’t wait for the next weekend.”If the Broncos want to have any shot at the postseason, they have to win the final three games, starting with their home matchup on Christmas Eve. At 7-7, Denver has a 22% chance of making the playoffs, according to the New York Times postseason simulator. With a win over the struggling Patriots, the Broncos’ odds increase to 35% but a loss drops their chances to 3% — meaning their season is basically over.Payton said each hour has mattered since the Broncos have been in the playoff hunt. He added it’s much different compared to when a team is not competing for the postseason.“When you a...
