AUSTIN (Austin Business Journal) — The Kroger Co. debuted its grocery delivery service in Austin about a year ago. The nation's largest traditional supermarket chain has grown to reach 90 ZIP codes and aims to capture more market share and mindshare in the Texas capital. The expansion put Kroger (NYSE: KR) in a competitive grocery market: the Austin metro is home to about 40 locations — and counting — of H-E-B LP, seven of Whole Foods Market Inc., five of Sprouts Farmers Market Inc., plus additional smaller chains and boutique stores. But Austin's fast-growing economy and population enticed Kroger to make the push. The Cincinnati-based company wants to serve customers with fresh produce, convenience and affordable prices, said April Martin, head of e-commerce corporate affairs and communications. Plus, it already has plenty of experience in Texas, with about 40 stores across the Houston and Dallas areas, according to a Google Maps search.Read the full story at...STL Boy Scouts placing flags for Memorial Day 'good turn' today

Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca is facing an avalanche of opposition spending and a well-backed runoff challenger four years after the proud democratic socialist ousted a two-term incumbent. This time, though, she has company — as part of a trio of liberal runoff candidates seeking to push the council leftward. The runoff elections, with voting underway and ending June 6, could set the course for a more assertive legislative counterweight to the next mayor if CdeBaca retains her seat and voters in adjacent districts elect two progressive newcomers who also have the backing of the Denver Democratic Socialists of America and the Colorado Working Families Party. The prospect has rallied much of Denver’s political and business establishment in support of their more moderate runoff opponents, including first-term Councilman Chris Hinds in central District 10.The high stakes have fueled significant outside spending and sometimes-wild claims amid arguments about the directi...The battle to keep Colorado’s mobile home parks in local hands

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS – Peter Frombgen tries not to take this for granted.Every morning for 20 years, the former ski bum and bike mechanic peers out the window of his mobile home tucked alongside Lincoln Avenue, basking in a full view of the town’s famed ski area and lush Emerald Mountain before him.The ramshackle trailer might represent the most unique living arraignment in Routt County: A 1953 silver airstream cut in half, with a standard mobile home haphazardly welded in the middle. The kitchen floor slopes at odd angles and water sometimes leaks through ceiling cracks during heavy rainstorms. But the home allows Frombgen, 70, to continue living in a place he considers paradise — a place that has allowed him to ski 100 days a year, bike on gorgeous pathways and kayak the blue waters of the Yampa River.“As far as life goes,” he said, “I’m pretty (expletive) spoiled.”In a resort town where the average home price is close to $1 million, the...Review: The IQUNIX L80 has bones of a good keyboard but needs some work

My work life and my fun life intersect at my keyboard. It’s how I convey my thoughts as I write emails, sift through stories and edit articles. When I’m off the clock, the keyboard is how I play video games. With so much happening at my desk, finding the right keyboard was key to my work-from-home space. One of the devices I tried out was the IQUNIX L80 Formula Typing Wireless Mechanical Keyboard. It has the bona fides as typing powerhouse while also boasting features that make it appealing to gamers. I bought one from the IQUNIX website a few weeks ago and chose the keyboard because of its aesthetic. The color scheme reminded me of a NES controller and I liked its compact design. As the name implies, it’s an 80% layout keyboard, meaning it lacks the number pad and compresses the design so that it fits in a smaller form factor. It’s the type of keyboard one would get if desk space was tight. The IQUNIX L80 Formula Typing Keyboard has three ways to connect. While meat lovers look forward to a Memorial Day barbecue, many people might be looking for a vegetarian option. With their high protein content, black beans lend meaty substance to veggie burgers. Too often, though, the patties turn to mush. So for this recipe from our book “Cook What You Have,” which draws on pantry staples to assemble easy, weeknight meals, we went looking for ways to improve their texture. The answer was three-fold.First, we only mash the beans coarsely so that when combined with other ingredients, we’re not left with a smooth paste. Second, we incorporate a significant amount of quinoa — two-thirds of a cup to one 15½-ounce can of beans — to vary texture with little pops of the nutty, high-protein grain (though technically it’s a seed). And finally, we pan-fry the patties until browned and crisp. To ensure they don’t fall apart, we don’t rinse the beans; the starchy liquid clinging to them helps bind the mixture. We also add egg and panko breadcrumbs, and chillin...Latest news
